Daily - The dwarf Calabacillas
is a curious story of this painting. Has always assumed that corresponds the jester of Felipe IV Juan Calabazas, of which there is another table discussion on the authorship of Velázquez, and which I believe is clearly inferior.
But as "classical" Pumpkins, there are all kinds of theories about its real meaning, and the character portrayed. It has always been accepted that portrayed the dwarf, but new theories doubt it. In the book "Velázquez and Calderón ... " of the Royal Academy of History, we propose an interesting thesis: the pumpkins that seem to surround the dwarf are not such, but a (her left) a vessel of the usual at the time, and the other is a gold flask empty and overturned. The truth is that the flask is very clear.
From this data, the book takes place symbolizes how the vial Apollo, and therefore the true knowledge (through a line of thought a bit complex to describe briefly) and a duality between the choice of concepts equally possible: vacuum-packed, alive, dead, smart-dumb.
From there we went to the "rogue fable" of Aesop , in which a rogue goes to the temple of the god Apollo to try to trick you. In their hands lies a bird on the questioner to God if he is alive or dead. According to Apollo answer, the rogue will kill or release from his hands. God discovers the ruse and replied that only depends on the rogue he is alive or dead.
In the box, the Fool seems to hide something in his hands, giving credence to this theory, especially considering the crowd of Velázquez by philosophy (among his works are several philosophers, and I remember that in the list Your library also had books on the subject), but probably never know the real message of the picture.
In short, the book can find all the plot which, again, is very complex. Probably no entendáis no explanation that I have, but I've summarized the best I can ;-) Let's stay with the wonder
portrait executed by D. Diego , regardless of who the sitter. Watercolor on Fabriano
